Karen Grassle is an American actress, widely recognized for her iconic role as Caroline Ingalls, also known as "Ma," in the NBC television drama series Little House on the Prairie. The show, which ran from 1974 to 1983, brought her into millions of homes and cemented her place in television history.

Born on February 25, 1942, in Berkeley, California, Grassle had a strong foundation in theater before her television fame. She studied at the University of California, Berkeley, earning degrees in English and Dramatic Art, and later received a Fulbright Fellowship to the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. She made her Broadway debut in 1968 in "The Gingham Dog" and worked extensively in regional and stock theater throughout the country.
